Article Writing Guidelines

General Guidelines

  • There is zero tolerance for fake information, speculations, and fanfictions added to articles.
    • The usage of references when writing an article in this site is mandatory. A statement without reference or dubious information will be deleted.
  • The articles should be written in-the-universe style of writing and not with the outside-in perspective.
    • When writing a character page, we don't write the character like he/she is just a character in a series but we write as if we live in the universe.
  • New articles should be named according to the subject's correctly translated official name.
    • This usually refers to the English names the author provides and does not have to be the official English name by J-Novel.
  • The page name should be written using title case (e.g In Another World with My Smartphone).
  • Avoid using the second person pronouns in the articles.
  • In general, the articles should be written using present tense.
  • Subject that has not been covered in the Anime and/or Manga must be be labeled with the {{Spoiler}} notice.
  • Hyperlinking topic to its page should be used only when it is necessary.
    • The first mention of a character in any article should be hyperlinked to the said character page. Hyperlinking the subsequent mention of the character in the article is left to the writer discretion.

Character Pages

Any sentient named living beings are categorized as "Character" in this wiki. The general structure of the page is as the following:

  1. Character Infobox {{Char Box}}
  2. Short Introduction
  3. Appearance Section
  4. Personality Section
  5. Relationship Section
  6. History Section
  7. Abilities Section (only when applicable)
  8. Paraphernalia Section (only when applicable)
  9. Trivia (only when applicable)
  10. References {{Ref}}

Character Infobox

Main article: Character Infobox
  • The template {{Char Box}} should be used when creating the infobox.
  • Use only the most representative image of each media version of the subject.
  • While the infobox is quite robust, not every data label is relevant to the subject and not every data is revealed. Input the available data accordingly.
  • When there is a development (e.g job change or age progression), multiple data points can be inputted but please denote which data is the latest one.

Short Introduction

Short introduction must start with the full name of the subject in bold and the transliteration of his/her name. The best practice of this is to use the {{Nihongo}} template. The introduction should contain the briefest and concise summary of the subject based on the latest story progression. As this part is based on the current knowledge about the character, it should be written using present tense. However, past tense should be used when writing a deceased character article introduction.

Example of a bad introduction section:

Character A is a character in Isekai Smartphone series.

Appearance

Appearance section should describe the physical appearance of the subject, like the hairstyle, the eye color, and skin complexion, as well as the default outfit as written in the novel or as appeared in the anime. Alternate appearance due to transformation or other means and alternate outfits worn by the subject should also be described. The description should be illustrative enough to allow the reader to imagine the subject without looking at the character illustration. Character image gallery is also placed in this section. Only unique outfits from the official media (outside the promotional stuffs) can be added to the gallery.

Example of a bad appearance section:

Character A wears a skirt.

Personality

Personality section should describe the psychology and the morality of the subject as they are shown in the series. Although this part is subjective by nature, writers should approach this in the most objective manner and the most neutral point of view. Writers should present a balance view of the subject and as true as what is written or shown in the series without entering the fanfiction territory. For each statement describing a personality trait should have a sufficient amount of proofs to back it up. Avoid cherry picking proofs as a way to portray the character in certain way. For something to become a character trait, it has to occur multiple times over the span of the series. If it only occurs once and never happens again, then it is not a personality trait.

Example of a bad personality section:

Character A is a lazy person.

Relationship

This section should contain all of the relation that the subject has with other characters. Naturally, the point of view of the relationship has to come from the subject him/herself on how he/she thinks or feels about the other character. For example, when writing about Touya and Elze relationship, their relationship must be written from Touya's perspective on his page while it must be written from Elze's perspective on her page. Due to this writing style, it is possible to have two different results from the same relation, such as A views their relationship with B as romantic while B views their relationship with A as platonic. Lastly, don't put characters who never have any interaction with the subject in this section.

History

History section should summarize the story of the subject from the perspective of the subject. As this part is a retelling of past events, it should be written in past tense and in chronological order, not the publication order. Only events of which the subject have participated in can be used in this section, which also means writers still have to mention in the event where the subject was participating in even though he/she did not have any dialog line.

Abilities

Abilities should list every skills and abilities the subject has. The description of the skills should be concise and simple. The greater details or explanation of the skills should be left to its own article or the related article. However, if the extra explanation is only relevant to the subject, then writers can put that into this section.

Paraphernalia

Paraphernalia should list every equipment and tools the subject owns or used to own. Relevant information such as when and how the subject obtained the item and/or when and how the subject lost the item should also be added in the item description while the in-depth description should not be put in.

Trivia

This section is optional. Any interesting piece of information that does not belong to any other section can be written in here. While this place is sort of a mixed bag of information, it does not mean that anything can be written in here. Things including but not limited to fanfictions, speculations, head-canons, rumors, predictions must never be compiled in this section.

References

Main article: Quick Reference

For the references section, writers must use the {{References}} template. It will pull all the <ref> tag from the article and it will list them all together here. We encourage writers to use our referencing system {{Qref}}.

Media Pages

  • Web novel articles, light novel articles, manga articles, and anime articles are counted as media pages.
  • The content has to be factual and within the scope of the piece of media it is describing.
    • Synopsis should be written as to summarize the content concisely and without any subjectivity.
    • No hinting of future event or recalling past event from other book/chapter/episode.

    • However, users may upload unrelated or fan art images for use on their profile pages and nowhere else.

  • Do not upload files you aren't going to use on a page.
