Synopsis
Chapter I - The Divine Nation, Eashen
Touya along with Yae, Elze, Linze, Yumina, Kohaku, Leen and Paula travel to Eashen once more in order to explore the ruins that Leen had mentioned before. They arrive in a dense forest next to Yae's hometown in Oedo, a seemingly well defended fortress town. When Touya asks Leen replies she is seeking the "Ruins of Nirya", Yae does not know of such a place but is sure that her father might remember. As the party continue their way through the town; Touya cannot help but notice how similar Eashen to Japan during its earlier periods, from its architecture and people's appearances. Even the lords of Eashen share similar names of actual Japanese historical figures. Elze, Linze and Yumina are equally amazed by the place and ask about the exotic things they come across, which despite not being from Eashen Touya is able to answer with a surprising degree of accuracy, a fact that Yae is quick to point out. Touya notices that there seems to be a vibe of anxiety and fear among the townsfolk.
The party finally reach Yae's dojo and when Yae announces their presence, they are greeted by a female servant that Yae addresses as Ayane, the two are glad to see each other again and Ayane calls to Nanae Kokonoe that her daughter has returned. Soon Yae's mother comes out and embraces her daughter, Yae introduces the group to her mother and she bows at everyone in gratitude for looking after Yae, Touya meekly tells her there was no need for that as Yae herself has helped them out too. Yae then asks her mother where her father was, of which she grimly answers that he along with Yae's brother have joined Lord Tokugawa Ieyahsu in battle. Horrified, Yae asks what happened and Ayane replies that the Takeda clan had invaded the northwest of Tokugawa territory. Yae cannot believe why the Takeda would suddenly attack them like this, to which Ayane talks of a a suspicious one-eyed strategist with strong magic known as Yamamoto supposedly behind the Takeda. When Leen asks Nanae answers that Yae's father and brother are holding the Takeda at Kawagoe fort but may not last much longer without help. Yae resolves to help her family and rest of the party agree to join her, Touya uses 【Recall】to extract Yae's memory of a ridge not too far from the fort and everyone portals there with 【Gate】.
At the ridge; Touya casts 【Search】 to confirm that Yae's brother is safe. Yae wants to go in immediately but Leen points out that Kawagoe is surrounded and Leen's fairy wings lack the strength to fly them all in. Instead Touya proposes that he portals a few distances at a time until he can find a safe spot to portal everyone, and Leen agrees. After making a few trips Touya is forced to confront two Takeda warriors; he notes their unusual appearance, particularly the red oni masks they were wearing. After his initial attempts to shoot the warriors fail Touya brings them with 【Slip】, Touya then physically holds one in place and kicks his mask which destroys it, when it stops moving completely Touya deduces that the oni masks are controlling the warriors and shoots the other one in the face, splitting open his mask which also stops him for good. Touya inspects the fallen warriors and realizes that they were nothing more than corpses reanimated by the oni masks.
Eventually Touya is right beside Kawagoe, and using 【Long Sense】, he believes he has found Yae’s brother when he spots a dark-haired samurai clad in black armor within the fort. Touya portals into the fort next to the black samurai and is initially mistaken for an enemy but Touya assures them that he is not with the Takeda. After confirming that the black samurai is indeed Yae’s brother, Jutaro Kokonoe, Touya tells him that his sister has come to help. Jutaro reacts in disbelief but Touya asserts he is serious and asks for permission to portal her over; when Jutaro consents Touya casts another【Gate】 that Yae immediately emerges from and shares a heartfelt reunion with her brother, during which the rest of the party follow through. Yae introduces her friends to her brother and asks him if their father is alright. Which Jutaro confirms to her relief that he is indeed safe in the keep of the fort with Lord Ieyahsu.
Noticing the wounded samurai around him Touya sets a 【Program】 on his phone map already enchanted with 【Multiple】to mark every target that fits a criterion of his choosing just by selecting one instance. This allows him to instantly cast Cure Heal on all of the warriors at once, Jutaro is amazed by this feat but Touya informs him that he should still have his forces rest up, Touya then asks Jutaro if he knows anything about the undead samurai but replies that he does not. Leen, upon closer inspection suggests that the undead warriors are the work of an artifact, relics of ancient civilizations that possess strong magic. Touya decides that the Takeda forces needed to be dealt with regardless and so using his earlier 【Program】, he casts Shining Javelin on all of the undead samurai at once eliminating them, he then follows up with【Paralyze】 on the regular Takeda forces and the siege on Kawagoe is lifted. The Tokugawa celebrates their victory but Jutaro cannot comprehend what had just happened. The girls however simply sigh at the whole ordeal, remarking that they shouldn't be surprised at this point, Touya is offended by her comments.
Later everyone gathers at the fortress keep, Yumina introduces herself as the princess of Belfast and the rest of Touya's party as her "bodyguards" to Lord Ieyahsu and Jubei Kokonoe, the latter of which is surprised that his daughter is protecting someone that important. Ieyahsu thanks Touya's party for coming to his aid, to which Yumina humbly replies that it was no trouble and that they only happened to come at the right time. Ieyahsu then addresses Touya directly, Yumina claims Touya is her future husband, much to his embarrassment. Hearing this Ieyahsu and Jubei resignedly sigh, remarking that someone that defeated an entire army in seconds is worthy of engagement to the princess of Belfast, Yumina agrees saying that she is very proud of Touya, which only embarrasses him more.
Yumina then asks Ieyahsu and Jubei if they know about the Ruins of Nirya, which after pondering for a moment they answer that she must be referring to the ruins at Nirai Kanai, Jubei tells her that Nirai Kanai is near Shimazu territory at the bottom of the sea, making any attempts to reach it difficult if not impossible. When Touya asks whether the Takeda forces will attack again, Ieyahsu says they will most likely regroup and strike a second time with more weapons and reinforcements. Ieyahsu is stumped however, as the invasion was carried out in a way that Ieyahsu believed was unlike their leader Lord Takeda Schingen, he remarks that the rumors might be true after all. When Touya asks for clarification, Jubei tells him there are whispers that Schingen has passed away and his body is being controlled by strategist Yamamoto Kansukay for his own ends. Leen is convinced this is possible, reasoning that Kansukay may possess a spell or artifact that can control corpses.
Touya proposes capturing Kasukay and holding him until the situation cools down but Jubei dismisses the idea, saying that stealing Kansukay is near-impossible with him in the heavily guarded Takeda stronghold at Tsutsujigasaki and that they should not act on unconfirmed rumors. Undaunted, Touya asks Leen if the light magic she uses on her wings works for the whole body which she confirms. Linze points out however that nobody in Touya's party or Tokugawa's forces have been to Tsutsujigasaki rendering any attempts to portal there impossible. At this a voice in the keep suddenly volunteers to take Touya to the stronghold. Alarmed, Jubei demands the voice to show themselves and a female ninja comes out of hiding. The ninja introduces herself as Tsubaki; subordinate to General Kousaka Masanohbu, who is one of Takeda's Elite Four generals, pleading for help from Lord Ieyahsu to save the Takeda, as the rumors are indeed true, Lord Schingen is dead and Kansukay has kept this a secret in order to take control of the entire Takeda army, imprisoning all opposition including the Elite Four other than Kousaka. Ieyahsu wants to help but as he still needs his current forces in Kawagoe to defend the next Takeda assault, he enlists Touya to sneak into Tsutsujigasaki and deal with Kansukay which Touya agrees. Touya selects Leen to accompany him and Tsubaki into Tsutsujigasaki and they prepare for the infiltration in the evening.
Once night falls, Touya instructs Tsubaki to picture an obscure area close to the stronghold. Despite some death glares from the girls, Touya extracts the image with 【Recall】 and opens a 【Gate】 for the infiltrating trio. Once they cross Touya uses 【Long Sense】 to find and select a garden tree within Tsutsujigasaki as a starting point to break in. But when Touya tries to enter with 【Gate】 he finds himself being magically forced back, Leen suspects that a barrier talisman likely from Kansukay is blocking the spell. Tsubaki offers to go in and break the talisman herself but Leen is concerned that her attempts would alert Kansukay and make him harder to capture. With no other option Touya decides to have Leen use her concealing spell on Touya and herself right now so they can stealthily accompany Tsubaki into the stronghold directly, Leen consents and she casts Invisible. Leen uses the brief moment adjusting to the spell to toy with Tsubaki, fondling her while making it seem like Touya was responsible. Touya chops Leen on the head before she could cause any more harm but her shenanigans have made Tsubaki wary of working with the group. Touya becomes very worried about the outcome of the infiltration task.
At Tsutsujigasaki; Touya and Leen follow Tsubaki while invisible as the guards let her through the main gate. Touya is worried the barrier will break their spell but Leen assures him the barrier will only affect the stronghold and not the two of them directly. As not even Tsubaki has permission to enter the dungeons Leen makes her invisible as well enabling the trio to sneak in undetected. After climbing down a staircase they come across an old man meditating in one of the cells, and having sensed the trio's presence he asks who has entered. Addressing the old man as General Baba Nohbuharu, Tsubaki tells him that she is under orders from General Kousaka to break him out, also asking where she could find the other two generals Naito Masatoyoh and Yamagata Massakage. Acknowledging his colleague's intentions against Kansukay; General Baba agrees to the plan, telling Tsubaki that General Naito and General Yamagata are in cells further down but not before requesting the trio to reveal themselves.
As soon as Leens drops the Invisible spell Tsubaki introduces Touya and Leen to Baba and Touya creates a space in the cell bars for Baba to leave with 【Modeling】. They make their way deeper in the dungeons and eventually find Naito, a gentle-looking man looking similar to a retired worker, and the battle-scarred Yamagata, Baba calls for Touya to break the two out, mockingly referring to Touya as "squirt". Peeved, Touya reminds Baba of his name and Leen chimes in, recalling Touya's feats. The two imprisoned generals are shocked by this but Baba elects to still use squirt for Touya to protect his pride, Naito and Yamagata follow suit, calling Touya however they liked. Touya is inwardly disappointed that he would not be able to meet the lord that united these misfits under his banner.
Touya explains his plan of warping the three of them out of the stronghold but General Yamagata insists that he stay behind so he could mete his own justice on Kansukay. General Baba and General Naito also point out that Kansukay is a formidable foe with an exceptional strategic mind as well as demonic powers from a mysterious jewel he came across, which Leen concludes must be where he got his necromancy powers from. With that in mind Touya asks Tsubaki where Kansukay was and she answers that he is likely in Tsutsujigasaki's central quarter, which Touya confirms with 【Long Sense】. With no need for stealth now that the Elite Four were safe, Touya opts to destroy the barrier and approach Kansukay directly, he asks Leen how and she replies that he only needs to break one of four talismans at each of the stronghold's four corners. Yamagata leads the group to one of the talismans, but as Touya is about to shoot it Baba suggests that the group arm themselves to help fight Kansukay's forces, so Touya uses 【Modeling】 to craft some weapons. With the three generals ready Touya destroys the talisman, and after Touya checks and confirms that his spells were working again, he uses them to neutralize the soldiers in the stronghold, Touya then opens a 【Gate】to Kansukay's location.
The group soon find Kansukay in a large garden, General Yamagata immediately charges at him but is blocked by none other than the reanimated corpse of Lord Schingen himself. Kansukay then summons skeletal warriors to protect him further, Touya dispatches some of them before Leen decides to end it quickly by taking out all of the skeletons at once with Banish, leaving only Schingen's corpse remaining standing. Kansukay taunts the group, boasting that he is untouchable since none of the generals would dare strike their lord even if he were dead only to be interrupted by Touya destroying Schingen's mask with his gun taking Schingen out. Kansukay is confusingly shocked but quickly recovers as he takes off his eye patch, revealing what he claims to be the "Jewel of Immortality" that gives him the ability to recover from fatal strikes, which Yamagata immediately demonstrates when he slices off Kansukay's arm only for him to regenerate another.
Kansukay triumphantly declares he has the upper hand again but Touya simply plucks the jewel right out of his eye socket with 【Apport】. Leen examines the gem and confirms that it bears a curse that corrupts the wielder, the generals are impressed that she could tell with just a mere glance but Leen simply says not to underestimate the eyes of a fairy. Ignoring Kansukay's pleas, Leen declares the gem too dangerous to keep around and throws it into a wall utterly shattering it, Kansukay screams in pain before completely withering away into dust. The generals wonder what had just happened and Leen explains that the jewel likely absorbed all of Kansukay's life force ages ago leaving his body only being held together by the negative energy of said jewel, as such destroying the jewel meant that Kansukay could no longer sustain himself. The group also notice the undead warriors including Lord Schingen also fading away, the generals and Tsubaki say their prayers for their dead and Touya cannot help but join them in the act thanks to sharing similar habits in Japan.
Chapter II - The Legacy of Babylon
Touya's party spend the next three days helping the Takeda clan recover from the Kansukay incident. General Kousaka reveals that he had hidden and protected Lord Schingen's son Takeda Khatsuyohri from Kansukay and makes him the new lord of the clan, the Elite Four are reinstated and stability is restored. Just to be on the safe side though, Touya advises the Takeda not to pick any more fights with other clans. The party then say their goodbyes to Yae's family before continuing toward their intended destination of the Nirya ruins, which they quickly reach courtesy of extracting General Baba's memories of the place with 【Recall】.
The party find themselves on a beautiful beach on an island not too far from mainland Eashen, the girls are enamored by the ambience but Touya remains focused on the ruins. He runs a 【Search】and finds the ruins a hundred meters away from the beach on the sea floor just as Jubei had said. Not wanting to dive all the way down, Touya asks Leen if she knows any spells that enable someone to breathe underwater, which she replies unfortunately that she does not. As Touya sees the girls playing around at the beach shoreline and finding out that swimsuits exist in this world, he decides to turn the quest of reaching the ruins into a seaside holiday with the girls along with everyone in his house. Touya tries to invite Sue and somehow ropes in her parents to the excursion as well. Elze invites Micah and Aer to the party and with some pressure from Duke Alfred, Touya extends the invitation to the royal family and General Leon agrees to come too. Touya gets worried for Belfast with how much free time their nobility seem to be having.
Once everything was prepared, Touya gets his own swimwear from Zanac and joins them at the beach. Elze gets introduced to swimming warmups from Touya and quickly goes to swim with Yae, Linze is reluctant to join her sister but Sue and Renne eagerly head straight in accompanied by Cecile. Touya cannot help but stare at the girls' cute figures and admire their "features" which which nearly lands him in trouble with Lapis but he is barely able to cover his tracks. When Touya asks her why she isn't joining in the fun, Lapis simply says she is still on duty tending to the beachgoers. Touya tries to convince her to relax but she remains focused on her work, Touya inwardly appreciates her commitment.
Hearing noises in the distance, Touya looks and sees King Tristwin, his brother and General Leon dive-bombing into the water and racing each other. Touya starts commenting to himself how childish they were behaving when he is interrupted by Yumina, she asks him how she looks in her swimsuit and Touya replies that she looks adorable, the almost instinctive comment he made leads Touya to believe that he does not truly love her yet. This notion is somewhat tested when Yumina, wanting Touya to go swimming with her, presses herself very closely against Touya, which starts to embarrass him. Not wanting to get completely flustered, Touya quickly tells Yumina he will join her as soon as he is done with the ruins, Yumina is slightly disappointed but lets him go, joining the others at the water. Paula tries in vain to swim herself, getting knocked back by the waves over and over.
Touya accompanied by Leen tries again to head for the ruins; at first he tries just swimming toward it himself but the ocean proves too dark to see and the ruins too far down for Touya to hold his breath long enough and he is forced to surface. Seeing Touya's struggle Leen considers calling Marion, matriarch of the Marine species in Mismede to aid their efforts but is hesitant due to the Marine's non-interference policy with surface affairs. With seemingly no other way forward the pair decide to call it a day and join the others at the barbeque feast that Micah and Crea they had set up for this occasion. Touya notes how protective Leim and Laim were of Sue and Yumina respectively, inwardly wanting Laim to watch out for him too.
The day after the beach party Touya still cannot find a way to see and reach the ruins; Linze suggests using 【Long Sense】 to peer into the ocean, this along with the help of a Light Sphere allows Touya to find a platform in the ruins inscribed with a magic circle surrounded by six pedestals each with a spellstone. Touya asks Leen about what he saw and she guesses that Touya had found a teleportation circle, a method of instant transportation that is activated when the six elemental pedestals are activated. Even knowing what it was however Touya still needs a way to get down there to activate the circle; it is at this moment that Kohaku reveals that she knows someone that her master can summon that could help him with his predicament.
The party make the preparations for the summoning; Leen is skeptical of this idea since as far as she knew summoning magic never allowed for users to pick a desired target, Kohaku assures her that if she were to combine her spirit power with Touya's magic, the one she desires will definitely appear. Even then Leen cannot comprehend calling on the Black Monarch when Touya already has the White Monarch under him, Yae simply tells Leen to discard logic when it came to Touya's actions. Speaking to Touya Kohaku warns him to prepare himself as the Black Monarchs' odd nature means that she cannot predict what they will want for their contract. Touya asks Kohaku why she keeps referring to the Black Monarch as "they" and she replies that the Black Monarch actually consists of two entities that collectively hold the title but advises that Touya simply see for himself to better understand what she means.
Touya steps in front of the summoning circle and channels his dark magic; soon a mist begins to gather and grow in the circle, Kohaku joins in the magic channeling and the mist grows even thicker. Touya then recites a specific chant and a gigantic tortoise with an equally large black serpent wrapped around its shell appears before Touya. The snake recognises the White monarch and engages in friendly conversation, Touya describes the serpent's voice as male but being like that of a drag queen, the snake then asks about Touya and Kohaku introduces him as her master. Surprised; the turtle turns to look at Touya as if she were evaluating him, which Touya thought was rather harsh. The tortoise then starts to tease Kohaku for falling to a mere human; Kohaku fires back, declaring that Touya will soon be their master as well. Provoked, both the snake and tortoise approach Touya and propose a trial by combat to prove his worth: if Touya is able to take on the Black Monarchs within the summoning circle until sunset then they will consider a making a contract. Yumina gets worried for Touya's safety when he accepts but Touya assures her that he is going to win this and enters the circle, noticing Touya's unsually calm demeanor the Black Monarchs praise his courage and the turtle roars loudly, indicating the start of the trial.
Immediately, Touya casts 【Slip】 on the ground beneath the Black Monarchs, sending them crashing loudly to the ground. Wasting no time, Touya casts 【Enchant:Slip】 on a single bullet as well as a 【Program】 on the bullet that makes it immediately cast another instance of 【Slip】 as soon as the previous one wears out. Touya then fires the enchanted bullet beneath the Black Monarchs just as they were recovering from the earlier 【Slip】 causing the tortoise and snake to fall over and over whenever they tried to get back up. Satisfied with his work, Touya elects to wait until sunset and asks Linze for some sandwiches, Kohaku rolls along the ground in laughter at her fellow monarchs’ predicament and Paula joins in imitating the same movements, the girls however react with disgust and chide Touya for using such cruel methods, Touya finds their comments entirely uncalled for as in his view he was simply taking the path of least resistance.
A few of the snake and tortoise’s crashes interrupts Touya’s lunch and he nonchalantly tells the pair not to disturb him which earns him another rebuke from the girls. Angered, the pair try to hit back with water-based attacks at Touya but miss due to their constant slipping; not wanting to deal with their retaliations, Touya casts 【Enchant:Accel】 on another of his bullets which he shoots at the two giant reptiles, causing them to slip and fall continuously at a much faster rate. Horrified, the girls ask what Touya just did and when he explains they again call Touya evil, even Kohaku has by this time stopped laughing at the ordeal, leading Touya to inwardly admit that he may have overdone it.
Soon the Black Monarchs are so overcome with dizziness that they agree to make a pact with Touya begging for the sliding to stop. Touya dispels his【Slip】 loop and under the glares of the girls apologizes to the pair for his cruel tactics. Eventually the Black Monarchs recover enough to acknowledge Touya's strength and deem him worthy of a contract. Remembering what Touya did with Kohaku he asks the pair if he has to give them new names as well which they confirm, Kohaku mockingly proposes the names "Snake" and Tortoise" to which the Black Monarchs angrily object, Touya decides not to mention that he actually liked the idea. Eventually. Touya dubs the black serpent "Kokuyou" and the tortoise "Sango", the pair happily accept their new names and the contract is completed. Just as they are about to exit the magic circle however Kohaku reminds them that they need to change into a less intimidating form which they do, shrinking into a normal sized tortoise and snake that floated in the air. The pair inform Touya that they are not as strong or fast in this form but will try to serve him as much as they could, Touya accepts their support and hopes they can get along.
With the contract complete Touya tells Kokuyou and Sango that he needs them to grant him the ability to breathe underwater, the pair readily agree to cast a ward that does just that and Touya tells the others that he plans to go to the ruins on his own with his two new servants and activate the teleportation circle there, which he will then open a 【Gate】 for everyone else to travel to once he has scouted the new location. Elze worriedly warns Touya to be careful as he enters the water where he finds to his amazement and delight that the barrier not only allows him to breathe normally, but renders him immune to getting wet and the effects of water pressure. The three of them eventually reach the teleportation circle where Touya begins channeling magic of all the elements into the pedestals, immediately they are teleported into a beautiful garden teeming with flowers accompanied with a small flowing water canal with songbirds flying overhead, all of which was topped with a glass dome. As the trio explore the place, they encounter a mysterious girl with green hair that looked about the same age as the Elze and the others. She introduces herself as Francesca, terminal gynoid of the Garden of Babylon, though would prefer to be known as Cesca. Touya is more concerned about the fact that the girl to his horror was not wearing any bottoms, bearing her underwear in full display to him, he embarrassingly demands that Cesca put something on while trying in vain not to look at her underwear.
When Cesca eventually dons a skirt Touya asks her what this place was; she tells him that this is the Hanging Garden of Babylon floating high in the sky, which is confirmed when Cesca shows Touya the edge of the dome where he clearly sees clouds on the outside. Touya then asks Cesca the purpose of the garden and she replies that this was a hobby of her creator Doctor Regina Babylon. Touya wonders why Cesca would use such a term and realizes that Cesca is not human which is confirmed when Sango says she cannot detect her vital flow. Cesca continues, revealing that she was made and assigned by Doctor Babylon five-thousand and ninety-two years ago to be the management gynoid of the Garden, not completely a machine but a lifeform made with both magical and mechanical parts welded together. Cesca then claims that because if this she cannot be impregnated but can still take part in the "relevant act" if desired, Touya reacts with disgust and begins to view Doctor Babylon in a very negative light. Knowing how old the garden was, Touya is impressed that it has managed to stay active for so long, to which Cesca reveals that the garden is strengthened by magic and that she was in sleep mode for the duration of the time. She then assigns Touya as her new master on account of him being able to teleport to the garden by himself as well as simply not turning down Cesca's earlier temptations, Touya thinks even less highly of Doctor Babylon when he finds that Cesca's criteria for picking a new master was her idea.
Afterword
For no good reason, the third volume ended up being full of undead. Really, how did this happen? I thought this when I finished the second volume too, but I can’t believe we’re at the third volume already. I introduced a lot of characters that are going to become important in later volumes here. They probably won’t have a chance to shine in the near future, but I’d be happy if you at least kept them in the back of your mind somewhere as you continue reading.
I’m sure most of you have guessed, but Eashen, which makes an appearance in this volume, was based off of Japan’s Warring States Era. However, while some of the characters’ names may resemble those of famous historical figures, there’s no direct relation between them whatsoever. Sorry about that.
Oh yeah, I think I already mentioned this back in volume one, but I write this whole thing on my smartphone. Even when I pass the manuscript off to my editor, I check over everything on my smartphone. Plus, all of my submissions to the website, Shosetsuka ni Narou, were done on my phone as well. And when I stop for a break, I just play mobile games. Honestly, staring at my smartphone all day puts a lot of strain on my eyes. I should probably look into getting some good eye drops. Or eat more blueberries. Though apparently studies on how antioxidants affect sight aren’t conclusive… Too bad.
Alright, enough with the rambling and on to the acknowledgments. I’d like to thank my illustrator, Eiji Usatsuka. Those swimsuits you drew for this volume’s color pages were amazing. Thank you so much for all your hard work. I’d also like to thank my editor, K. Thanks for putting up with all my phone calls. Sorry we always end up getting off topic… And a big thanks to everyone at the Hobby Japan editorial department, along with everyone else who had a hand in the publication of this book. Without you, I would be nothing.
Last but not least, thank you to all of the readers on Shosetsuka ni Narou that gave my story a chance in the first place.
