Null Magic (無属性魔法,Muzokuseimahō?, literally meaning "attribute-lacking magic") is one of the attributes of magic that exist in the In Another World With My Smartphone series. This type of magic is exclusive to mages with the Null (無属性,Muzokusei?) affinity, but its attribute does not fit with the other six[1].
Null magic can be regarded as personal magic as only the person who has the spell can use it[2]. As mentioned, it is infrequent for two people can use the same spell but it is also possible for one spell to have an effect similar to that of another[3]. The null magic classification is extremely diverse, and the number of spells it includes is so huge that it makes null magic books look like phonebooks[4]. The spells recorded in such books range from minute spells ike, spell for lengthening the time of smoke of an incense stick[5], spell for making the color of tea more vivid[5], and spell for smoothing off the splinters from wood[5], to profound spells like 【Program】 which allowed the users to give a set of instructions or rules on an object[6], 【Analyze】 which allowed the users to browse the mechanism of an object[7], and 【Delete】 which allowed the users to erase the existence of an object[8]. Because of the nature of the magic, null magic books are often sold for entertainment purposes rather than for studying[9].
The outcome of the spell is correlated with the physical or magical power of the user. It can be seen when Touya lost when competing with Elze on carrying competition using 【Boost】[10].
It is almost impossible for a human can use more than 2 null magic spell[11]. The fairy clan has higher aptitude toward null attribute which is why it is common for a fairy to have null magic[12].
Any magicians need to have affinity toward null attribute before they can use null magic[13]. For testing one's aptitude with certain attribute, magic stones can be used[14]. Normally, the magic stone amplifies and releases the user's magic power into certain element that the stone represents[13], however null magic stone only amplifies the user's magic power without releasing any elemental substances[15]. The magic stone for null attribute is colorless[16]. Unlike other element, null magic has no element summoning spell, so for testing their null attribute, magicians need to know their personal null spell beforehand[17] while holding a magic stone, and if the magic stone reacts, then the person has an aptitude for that attribute[13].
Unlike other attribute, null magic has different mechanic regarding its incantation. To activate a null magic spell, the users must concentrate their magic power then chant the null magic name[18]. Because of the specificity of each null magic, some spell might requires additional prerequisite. For example, 【Apport】 can only be used for object with certain size[19]. On certain occasion, when the users have more than one null magic spell, they can combine their spell into one spell. The combination of null magic spell can be seen when Touya Mochizuki used 【Enchant:Reading】 on a glasses[20].
The user can absorb or significantly weaken magic from all attributes they have an aptitude for. Absorbing the wrong attribute will lead to spellsickness
The user is able to make an object float in the air. However, the object must be within arm's reach, so spells like [Fly] are needed to levitate the target into high altitudes
The user can alter their body features (including their vocal chords) to resemble an individual. Because the user’s features are actually reformed, these disguises cannot be told apart by touch, unlike those that are replicated by other disguise spells like [Mirage]. However, the user must make contact with the individual they are mimicking, who must be alive at the time of the mimicry. Additionally, the spell does not work on people smaller than the user, and only lasts for six hours.
The user copies his/her target's memories into his/her own head. The spell can also use to help the target remember something that they have forgotten.
The user can search and identify anything as long as what they are searching for matches the criteria of whatever the user has in mind. This includes people
The user reduces the friction of any solid matter to a point where anyone (including the user) would slip and fall if he/she were to walk on the affected matter.
Null Magic is possibly a reference to the concept of Ku (void) regarded as the highest of the Godai (great forms) in the Japanese Buddhist concept of Gogyo (Five phases/elements).
