Shogi Board, and Underground Ruins (将棋盤、そして地下遺跡。 Shōgi-ban, soshite Chika Iseki?) is the third episode of the In Another World With My Smartphone anime.

Plot

The episode begins with Touya and the girls walking through the city, where Elze suggests they do some shopping since they are in the royal capital, to which the others agree. Touya is surprised to see species other than humans in the royal capital; after a short time exploring the city, Touya and the others see a young girl (Arma Strand) who appears nervous and lost. Upon introducing themselves to Arma (who was initially scared), Touya help her to find her sister (Olga Strand, the ambassador for the Kingdom of Mismede) with whom she had gotten separated. After reuniting the two sisters, Touya split from each to do their shopping. Touya buys a magic coat that protects the wearer against magic attacks they have aptitudes for, but doubles the damage of magic they do not have an aptitude for.

Due to heavy rain Touya and the others have been stuck inside the Silver Moon for three days. He observes Barral ( the owner of a weapon shop) and Dolan ( the owner of the Silver Moon Inn) playing Shogi (a game Touya created with his newly acquired magic Modeling) which they had been playing nonstop since the rain began at Micah's irritation. When questioned about the whereabouts of the others, Micah says that Elze and Yae went to the Parent cafe to try a new dessert (roll cake) that had recently been released (thanks to Touya), with Elze asking Touya to deliver some to the Duke upon their return.

Later at the Duke's mansion, Touya delivers the cakes to Duke's mansion while introducing him to Shogi as well (which he becomes immediately obsessed with), with Touya agreeing to teach him how to play the game. After an unknown amount of time has passed (a few hours possibly), the Duke is still playing Shogi with Touya, much to Sue's annoyance, so she then begins to assault Touya (tickling him) so that he can convince her father to let her play which proves to be unsuccessful.

Later the group pays a visit to the Guild in the royal capital (which is shown to be larger than the building in Reflect) to take on a new quest. Touya once again suggests taking on a slime-hunting quest which the girls immediately reject due to their extreme dislike of slimes, though this doesn't stop him from fantasizing about the girls being attacked by slimes. They instead take on a subjugation request to take down a Dullahan and a group of one-horned wolves that were in the Old Capital Ruins, which they are successful in doing with a bit of difficulty. While taking a break after completing the quest, Touya uses his Search Spell to look for any signs of treasure nearby though his attempt fails. He tries again, this time searching for any signs of a historic treasure, with it being a success.

They decide to look for Touya's treasure, only to find the location buried under a veritable mountain of rubble. While trying to figure out how to get through it, Linze casts a powerful fire spell to destroy it, with Touya saying that it was a bit excessive, causing her to become embarrassed. After opening the revealed door, Touya and the others enter an underground passage with Linze using one of her light spells to help guide them safely. After traveling quite some distance underground, they come across a large wall covered in a strange language that even Linze couldn't understand. Touya decides to take a picture of it so that they can study it later (which surprises the girl due to the flash).

Finding a symbol that reacts to earth magic, Linze asks Touya to activate it since she, Elze, and Yae don't have the affinity. Taking a safe distance (in case it's a trap), the girls watch Touya activate the symbol; the wall it's on dissolves to reveal a tunnel. They reach the end to find a strange glass statue. Linze's light ball is fading, prompting Touya to ask if her spell is fading; it turns out it's unnatural, as the spell should last a few hours. Yae quickly notices a red glow coming from within the statue; Touya realizes it's alive. The strange object begins releasing horrible soundwaves that pain their ears and shake the room. The room starts collapsing from the sound, forcing Touya to [Gate] everyone back to the surface.

Everyone makes it back safely, but their relief is short-lived. The glass monster breaks through to the surface in an explosion that clears the debris it created. Linze attempts a flame spell, but the monster only absorbs it. Yae attempts to cut it, but the attack barely works; Elze fails to punch it. Touya uses [Slip], realizing only direct magical attacks can be absorbed. Linze drops ice on the monster, with Elze using a full-powered [Boost] kick to break its legs. Unfortunately, it regenerates and stabs Elze. Touya tends to Elze, whose wound wasn't fatal. Touya quickly realizes that the red orb in the monster is what gives it life; he Apport it away, allowing Elze to break it.

The quartet quickly reports the incident to the Duke, to whom Touya plans to gift copies of the photos taken by his smartphone so that historians and archeologists can try deciphering the ancient language to learn more about the monster and why the capital was moved in that era. There's a good chance more of these creatures could be lurking in this world.

Later, Touya uses [Drawing] magic to create copies of the pictures from his smartphone. He soon [Gate]s over to the Duke's mansion just as his carriage takes off. The carriage stops, and the Duke exits, glad Chance has brought Touya to him again. Touya wonders what's wrong, explaining that the king has been poisoned.

Differences

  • In the light novel, when Touya meets Arma Strand for the first time, he is alone; in the anime, he is with Yae and the other girls.
  • The moment when Touya buys his coat is shown in the light novel but omitted in the anime.
  • Yae's registration to the Guild is entirely omitted in the anime.
  • In the LN, during the fight with the Dullahan, they can cut off one of its arms with a black/purple mist that comes from the separated part, but this removed in the anime.

Trivia

  • This episode shows the first anime appearance of the Phrase
  • Gate is revealed to be able to open horizontally and not just vertically; Touya's escape portal opens that way. In this case, it seems to eject the passengers over the side of it; otherwise, they would fall back in.
